Grace Cummings has one of those voices that stops a room. The Melbourne singer songwriter's instrument has been called commanding, magnetic, and possessed of a devastating force, and it sits at the centre of three studio albums that draw from Irish folk, acoustic blues, and the dusty American songwriting tradition of Townes Van Zandt and Lucinda Williams. Her debut Refuge Cove came out in 2019 on Melbourne label Flightless after the label's founder caught one of her live shows, and she toured it alongside Weyes Blood, Evan Dando, and J Mascis. Her second album Storm Queen arrived in 2022, self produced during the pandemic with fiddle and tambourine adding texture to her stripped back sound. For her third record Ramona (2024), she brought in producer Jonathan Wilson, recording at his Topanga Canyon studio after hearing his work with Angel Olsen. The album, named after a character in a Bob Dylan song, goes bigger with strings, horns, and piano, and features contributions from harpist Mary Lattimore and multi instrumentalist Drew Erikson. Cummings also has a theatre background, having performed with the Melbourne Theatre Company.
