One of the pillars of the German heavy metal scene, Grave Digger have been at it since 1980, when vocalist Chris Boltendahl and guitarist Peter Masson started the band in Gladbeck. They are counted among the "big four" of the German heavy and power metal scene alongside Helloween, Rage and Running Wild, which tells you something about their staying power across four decades. Over the years they have taken on some genuinely ambitious projects, including a Middle Ages Trilogy that covered Scottish history, the Knights Templar and the legend of King Arthur across three albums in the late 1990s. Later records drew from Edgar Allan Poe and Richard Wagner's Ring cycle. Their 2009 album Ballads of a Hangman was their first to feature twin guitars, recorded with additional guitarist Thilo Hermann. Live work has always been central to the band, from early tours with Celtic Frost and Helloween to a sold out anniversary show in Bochum and a 25th birthday concert in São Paulo.
