About
Jan Rot made his name in the Netherlands as the man who put other people's songs into Dutch, and he did it with a rare range. Pop hits, yes, but classical works too. His Dutch version of Bach's St Matthew Passion even climbed the Dutch pop album charts around Easter 2006, which is not something many translators of sacred music can say. Born in Makassar, he was a singer songwriter first and a translator second, working in the nederpop and pop rock corner of Dutch music. After a terminal cancer diagnosis in 2021 he kept performing right up to April 2022. He died in Rotterdam on 22 April that year, still on the road as a working musician to the very end.
