José James has spent his career defying easy categorization, weaving together jazz, hip hop, soul and R&B into something that feels genuinely his own. The Minneapolis born baritone first caught wide attention when DJ Gilles Peterson signed him to Brownswood Recordings for his 2008 debut The Dreamer. His 2010 album For All We Know, recorded with pianist Jef Neve on the legendary Impulse! label, won both the Edison Award and the Académie du Jazz Grand Prix for best Vocal Jazz Album of the year. That warm, fluid voice has taken him to stages like the Hollywood Bowl and the Kennedy Center, and earned him guest spots alongside McCoy Tyner, Laura Mvula, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Over the years James has worked with Blue Note Records across several albums, including a full tribute to Billie Holiday and the soul flavored Lean On Me. More recently he launched his own Rainbow Blonde label and has kept up a steady creative pace, releasing live recordings, a Christmas record, and in 2025 a follow up called 1978: Revenge of the Dragon.
