About
Joshua Bell plays a 1713 Stradivarius known as the Gibson ex Huberman, a violin so storied it was stolen twice from its previous owner, Bronisław Huberman, with the thief only confessing on his deathbed. Bell acquired it for just under four million dollars and made his first recording with it, Romance of the Violin, in 2003. He's the kind of violinist who moves comfortably across worlds: from premiering Nicholas Maw's concerto and winning a Grammy for it, to playing the haunting solo on John Corigliano's Oscar winning soundtrack for The Red Violin, to collaborating with Hans Zimmer on Angels and Demons. Since 2011 he has served as music director of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, a role recently extended through 2028. He also plays himself in places you might not expect, including three episodes of Mozart in the Jungle and a Netflix kids series. More recently he recorded the classic Méditation from Thaïs with the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, showing he is still finding interesting pairings for his playing.
