Kate Tempest built a reputation that crosses genre boundaries most artists wouldn't dare touch: rapper, poet, playwright, novelist, all at once. The spoken word piece Brand New Ancients, performed to an orchestral backing, won the Ted Hughes Award in 2013 and announced Tempest as something genuinely different. Two Mercury Prize nominations followed, for Everybody Down in 2014 and Let Them Eat Chaos in 2016, both produced with Dan Carey and rooted in a dense, narrative style that feels closer to a novel read aloud than a conventional rap record. Tempest came out as non binary in 2020 and as a trans man in 2025, the same year the fifth studio album Self Titled arrived on Island Records. That record features collaborations with Neil Tennant, Young Fathers, and Connie Constance, and was the first to showcase a deeper, more masculine voice after medical transition. Critics responded warmly, with Metacritic registering universal acclaim. A second novel, Having Spent Life Seeking, followed in 2026.
