Few piano duos have managed to be genuinely cool across as many genres as the Labèque sisters. Katia and Marielle, born in France, built their reputation on contemporary and classical work, but it was their 1980 two piano recording of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue that turned them into international names, selling over half a million copies. From there, their range kept growing: baroque music on period instruments, jazz, flamenco, ragtime, minimal music, and experimental rock all found a place in their world. Composers including Philip Glass, Luciano Berio, Michael Nyman, and Osvaldo Golijov have written works specifically for them. They have performed for crowds of over 100,000 at Schönbrunn Palace with the Vienna Philharmonic, and have premiered projects blending minimalism with electronics, including a 2019 collaboration with Thom Yorke of Radiohead for their Minimalist Dream House project. They run their own label, KML Recordings, now distributed through Deutsche Grammophon, and their own foundation and studio in Rome, where they also champion younger experimental acts.
