Loma grew out of a touring partnership: when Cross Record's Emily Cross and Dan Duszynski hit the road with Jonathan Meiburg's band Shearwater, the three clicked well enough to start their own project. They tracked their 2018 Sub Pop debut in a rammed earth house in Dripping Springs, Texas, where the building's unusual acoustics and surrounding wildlife fed directly into the recordings. One of their defining moves was pitching Cross's voice subtly downward, a "sonic mask" that has stayed with them across all three albums. Their second album, Don't Shy Away (2020), pushed into programmed electronics, horns and free jazz textures, and caught the ear of Brian Eno, who praised the track "Black Willow" on BBC Radio and ended up collaborating on "Homing." For their third record, How Will I Live Without a Body? (2024), the band recorded remotely across different countries before gathering in England, where Cross works as an end of life doula, using a stone house and a chapel for natural reverb. The album's title comes from AI text trained on Laurie Anderson's writing.
