About
Also known as: Fatih Karaca
Mabel Matiz is the stage name of Turkish singer songwriter Fatih Karaca, and it's a pretty literary pick. "Mabel" comes from a character's nickname in Buket Uzuner's novel Kumral Ada Mavi Tuna, while "Matiz" is old Greek slang for "drunk". Together they're meant to reflect how he sees the world. He started out putting songs on Myspace in 2008, which caught the ear of producer Engin Akıncı, who offered him an album. That self titled debut arrived in 2011, and nearly everything on it was written and composed by Matiz himself. His second record, Yaşım Çocuk (2013), was the breakout: "Zor Değil", "Alaimisema" and his cover of Yıldız Tilbe's "Aşk Yok Olmaktır" became hits, and Milliyet Sanat named it Album of the Year. Six studio albums later, he's also been in the headlines for the 2025 obscenity complaint over his song "Perperişan", reportedly the first time a single song in Turkey was targeted through the courts.
