About
Formed in Wales in 1999 by Rob Reed, a former member of Cyan, Magenta built their sound around the classic progressive rock of the 1970s, drawing openly from Genesis, Renaissance, Yes and Mike Oldfield rather than shying away from those influences. That honesty paid off: their debut album Revolutions was named Best New Album of 2001 by Musical Discoveries, and their second record Seven sold out its first pressing within a month of release. At the heart of the band is the pairing of Reed on keyboards and Christina Booth on lead vocals, a combination first tested in their earlier project Trippa. The studio albums stack up impressively: Home is a concept piece following a woman who emigrates from Liverpool to the USA in the early 1970s, while Metamorphosis pushed into darker territory with just four tracks, two of them stretching past twenty minutes. Guitarist Chris Fry rounds out the core trio, and the band has released live recordings from venues including Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios.
