About

Also known as: New Cool Collective Big Band, New Cool Collective Bigband

New Cool Collective has been one of the Netherlands' most versatile jazz outfits since forming in Amsterdam in 1993. Built around a tight core of Benjamin Herman on sax, Joost Kroon on drums, and Willem Friede arranging at the keys, they can scale up to a full 19 piece big band stacked with saxophones, brass, percussion and vocals. That flexibility has kept them fresh across decades: one year they're covering Dutch pop classics with singer Guus Meeuwis on Hollandse Meesters, the next they're teaming up with Senegalese saxophone player Thierno Koité from Orchestra Baobab for a release that earned them an Edison Award in 2018, their second after winning the same prize in 2000. They've also worked with Mark Reilly of Matt Bianco, appeared in a Dutch feature film as a fictional band, and taken home a Golden Calf at the Dutch Film Festival for the score to that same movie.
