Detroit's Obie Trice came up through the city's rap battle circuit and caught the right ears when D12 member Bizarre introduced him to Eminem, leading to a deal with Shady Records in 2000. His debut album Cheers landed in 2003 with a stacked roster of collaborators including Dr. Dre, Timbaland, Busta Rhymes, and 50 Cent. The single 'Got Some Teeth' cracked the top ten in several countries and the album went Gold in the US. His follow up, Second Round's on Me, hit the Billboard 200 top ten as well, and featured the heartfelt 'Cry Now', where Trice processed a real life shooting and reflected on the Detroit he knew. After parting ways with Shady Records in 2008, no falling out with Eminem involved, Trice launched his own label Black Market Entertainment and kept releasing music on his own terms. Bottoms Up, The Hangover, and The Fifth all came out through the imprint, showing he was never going anywhere. He remains one of Detroit hip hop's most direct and uncompromising voices.
