About
Also known as: The Philip Glass Ensemble Woodwinds
Founded by Philip Glass in 1968, the Philip Glass Ensemble was built specifically to bring his minimalist compositions to life, and the group's sound became so distinctive it essentially defined what early Glass music felt like. Amplified woodwinds, keyboard synthesizers, and a solo soprano voice singing solfeggio: that combination became a signature. The ensemble premiered Glass's landmark opera Einstein on the Beach in 1976, and decades later staged a full international revival starting in Montpellier in 2012. They have also performed La Belle et la Bête, Glass's opera set to the visuals of Jean Cocteau's 1946 film, and in 2014 shared a stage with Steve Reich at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, their first time together in over thirty years. Today the ensemble runs under the musical direction of keyboardist Michael Riesman, keeping the core sound alive.
