About

Also known as: Raymond van 't Groenewoud

Raymond van het Groenewoud has been one of the most distinctively Belgian voices in Dutch language music since the 1970s, blending pop rock with a poet's sensibility and a clown's instinct for provocation. He describes himself not just as a musician but as a poet, philosopher and clown, and his catalogue backs that up. His 1977 single 'Meisjes' remains one of the most beloved Flemish rock songs ever recorded, and 'Liefde voor Muziek', a knowing nod to the James Brown gospel number from The Blues Brothers, hit number one in both Belgium and the Netherlands. Over the decades he has proven just as comfortable writing protest songs as love ballads. 'Weg met Amerika' took aim at George W. Bush, while 'WapperSong' targeted plans for a controversial Antwerp bridge. In 2022, he and his band closed the Gentse Feesten with a concert running nearly eight hours and covering 111 songs. A three part documentary called Raymond! aired in 2020 across Belgium and the Netherlands to mark his 70th birthday.
