About
Also known as: Ronald Eldon Sexsmith, Sexsmith, Sexsmith, Ron
Ron Sexsmith has spent decades quietly building one of the most respected songwriting catalogues in Canadian music. His 1995 self titled debut caught the ear of Elvis Costello, who praised it publicly and later invited Sexsmith to open for him, and that kind of peer admiration has followed him ever since. Artists like Feist, Rod Stewart, Emmylou Harris, and Nick Lowe have all recorded his songs, and Michael Bublé took "Whatever It Takes" onto his 2009 album Crazy Love. Sexsmith co wrote "Brandy Alexander" with Feist, a song that ended up on both their records. His sound sits in a melancholic folk pop space, built on elegant melodies and understated arrangements, though the more pop leaning Retriever, dedicated to Elliott Smith and Johnny Cash, showed he could stretch. He has now released eighteen albums, performed a duet of "So Long Marianne" with Leonard Cohen, and even published a well received novel, Deer Life, in 2017. A retrospective concert at Toronto's Massey Hall in early 2024 marked his fifth appearance at the iconic venue.
