Rosanne Cash has never been easy to pin down as just a country artist, and that restless quality is exactly what makes her catalog so compelling. Her 1981 album Seven Year Ache put her on the map with three No. 1 country hits, including the crossover title track that climbed to No. 22 on the pop chart, but she was already pushing well beyond Nashville conventions. She draws from folk, rock, blues, pop, and Americana, and her songwriting has grown increasingly personal over the decades. The 1990 album Interiors marked a sharp turn toward something darker and more introspective, signaling she was done with polished pop country. She has racked up 11 No. 1 country singles over her career, along with multiple Grammy wins including Best Americana Album for The River & the Thread. On top of recording, she has written and edited books, published essays and fiction in outlets like The New York Times and Rolling Stone, and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2015.
