About
Sirenia came out of Stavanger, Norway in 2001 when Morten Veland, a founding member of Tristania, walked away from that band and quickly built something new. The sound they landed on layers distorted guitars and synthesizers with female lead vocals, male death vocals, clean male vocals, a choir, and violins, all wrapped around lyrics that dig into human emotion and mental states. Their debut, At Sixes and Sevens, was recorded in France and drew partly from material Veland had originally written for Tristania. Over the years the band cycled through several singers, each leaving a mark on the catalogue. Fabienne Gondamin handled the debut, Henriette Bordvik appeared on An Elixir for Existence, and Monika Pedersen fronted Nine Destinies and a Downfall before Spanish X Factor contestant Ailyn stepped in for a run of albums that stretched from The 13th Floor all the way through The Seventh Life Path. Perils of the Deep Blue made history as their first record to crack the Billboard charts in the US, landing on both the Hard Rock Albums and Heatseekers Albums charts.
