Few bands blend orchestral grandeur with metal this ambitiously. Epica, formed in Reuver in the Netherlands by guitarist and vocalist Mark Jansen after he left After Forever, started out as Sahara Dust before renaming themselves after a Kamelot album. The resulting sound layers soprano vocals from Simone Simons against Jansen's growled delivery, all backed by orchestral arrangements, operatic choirs, and an ever expanding genre palette that pulls from death metal, progressive metal, black metal drumming, and even Middle Eastern and Celtic folk influences. Their momentum built steadily through a string of albums on Nuclear Blast. The Quantum Enigma hit No. 4 in the Netherlands and cracked the US Billboard 200, and The Holographic Principle in 2016 matched that chart peak at home. Lyrics across their catalogue tackle philosophy, spirituality, science, and socio political themes, giving their music an intellectual weight to go alongside the sheer sonic scale.
