Few metal singers can claim a three octave classical soprano voice, but Tarja has built an entire career on exactly that. She first made her mark as the original lead vocalist of Nightwish, the Finnish symphonic metal band she co founded in 1996 with Tuomas Holopainen and Emppu Vuorinen. That combination of thundering riffs and operatic vocals helped define a whole genre, drawing from her training at the Sibelius Academy and the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe. After a very public split from Nightwish in 2005, she launched a solo career that has turned out to be remarkably wide ranging. Her albums swing between full on symphonic metal and classical lied, with Christmas records thrown in for good measure, and she has toured extensively across Europe and South America. Recent activity includes a 2024 tour alongside Marko and a cover of Within Temptation's Angels, showing she has no intention of slowing down.
