From a small town in the Netherlands, Within Temptation grew from gothic doom metal beginners into one of the biggest names in symphonic metal. Founded in 1996 by vocalist Sharon den Adel and guitarist Robert Westerholt, the band's early sound was all slow keyboards, heavy riffs and death grunts. That changed dramatically with 'Ice Queen' in 2002, which shot to number two in the Netherlands and topped the charts in Belgium, pulling the album Mother Earth along with it. By 2016, the band had shifted more than 3.5 million albums worldwide. They have never stayed in one lane for long. The Silent Force and The Heart of Everything both debuted at number one in the Dutch charts, then came a live recording with the Metropole Orchestra. The Unforgiving in 2011 arrived with an entire transmedia universe, complete with comics and short films. Hydra brought in a wave of guest artists, Resist leaned into industrial and EDM, and their latest album Bleed Out pulls in metalcore and djent while nodding back to their gothic metal roots.
