About
Formed in Stockholm in 2010 around former Opeth drummer Martin Lopez, Soen quickly carved out a space in progressive metal with a sound that drew inevitable comparisons to Tool. Lopez addressed it head on, calling Tool not just a band but a genre, and simply pointing to the quality of the music. Their debut Cognitive arrived in 2012 mixed by David Bottrill, who has worked with Tool and Muse among others, and the technical chops of the lineup earned them serious attention right away. Since then Soen have kept a steady pace, releasing seven studio albums including Lotus, Imperial, and Memorial. The third album Lykaia was recorded entirely on analog equipment, which says something about the band's commitment to a particular sonic weight. Vocalist Joel Ekelöf, guitarist Cody Lee Ford, keyboardist Lars Åhlund, and bassist Stefan Stenberg round out the current lineup alongside Lopez, making Soen one of the more consistently active acts in progressive metal.
