About
Copenhagen's VOLA have spent nearly two decades carving out a sound that sits somewhere between crushing djent grooves and spacious progressive rock atmospheres, and the combination has won them a devoted following well beyond Scandinavia. The band's core is vocalist and guitarist Asger Mygind, alongside keyboardist Martin Werner, bassist Nicolai Mogensen and Swedish drummer Adam Janzi. Their albums trace a clear arc: the entrapment themes and heavier riffs of debut Inmazes giving way to the more electronic, outward looking Applause of a Distant Crowd, and then the muscular Witness in 2021. Their fourth studio album Friend of a Phantom arrived in November 2024, and the build up showed them branching out in interesting directions. Singles included the brooding 'Paper Wolf', and 'Cannibal', a collaboration with Anders Fridén of In Flames that came with a full music video. VOLA have always been a band that rewards close listening, layering melodies over rhythmic complexity without letting either element flatten the other.
