Static X built their reputation on what Wayne Static once called "evil disco", a skull crushing blend of industrial metal and nu metal that hit hard with their 1999 debut Wisconsin Death Trip. That record went platinum in the US and sent the band on a relentless touring run, reportedly 300 shows in the first year alone, sharing stages with Slayer, Sevendust, and Fear Factory on Ozzfest. Five more albums followed through the 2000s, with the band shifting lineup members along the way but always keeping that dense, mechanized heaviness at the core. By 2011 they had moved over three million albums worldwide. After Wayne Static passed away in November 2014, the remaining original members Tony Campos, Koichi Fukuda, and Ken Jay reformed the band in his honor. They used unheard recordings of Static to put together Project: Regeneration Vol. 1, released in 2020, and followed it up with Vol. 2 in January 2024. Live, the band features a masked vocalist known as Xer0, a deliberate tribute to their late frontman.
