Mushroomhead have been doing things their own way since forming in Cleveland in 1993, building a fanbase through relentless gigging and self released records long before a major label came calling. Their sound sits at a heavy crossroads of nu metal, industrial metal and alternative metal, but what really sets them apart is the presentation: masks, costumes, pseudonyms and live shows that feel closer to theatrical events than standard rock concerts. Just three days after their very first performance, they were sharing a stage with Gwar in front of 2,000 people. Their 2003 album XIII broke them to a much wider audience, debuting at number 40 on the Billboard 200 and eventually shifting 400,000 copies worldwide. The single "Sun Doesn't Rise" landed on MTV's Headbangers Ball and the Freddy vs Jason soundtrack, which says a lot about the world they inhabit. Through constant lineup changes, drummer and visual designer Steve "Skinny" Felton has been the one constant, keeping the band's distinctive identity intact across every chapter.
