From Regina, Saskatchewan, The Dead South have built a fiercely devoted following on both sides of the Atlantic by playing folk and bluegrass with a gritty, stomping energy that sits somewhere between a backwoods hoedown and a Southern gothic short story. Their 2014 debut album Good Company, released through German label Devil Duck Records, quietly spread across Europe and North America until the YouTube video for 'In Hell I'll Be in Good Company' exploded, racking up over 440 million views and sending the album into the Billboard Top 50 years after its release. The band, led by the core lineup of Nate Hilts, Scott Pringle, Danny Kenyon and Colton Crawford, won a Juno Award for Traditional Roots Album of the Year for their second record Illusion and Doubt, which critics praised for its eccentric lyrics, cello work and deep roots in African American musical traditions. They have since kept busy with Sugar and Joy, a live album, a pair of EPs, and the 2024 studio album Chains and Stakes.
