Jake Smith, the Oregon baritone who records under the name The White Buffalo, sits somewhere between folk, Americana, country and roots rock, with a storytelling instinct that gets compared to Townes Van Zandt and Steve Earle. He whistles where other singer songwriters reach for a harmonica, and his voice carries a depth and range that has drawn comparisons to the late Richie Havens. Smith built his reputation the hard way, sometimes driving a thousand miles between gigs after quitting a waiting job in San Francisco. His songs have a knack for finding their way onto screens. Sons of Anarchy featured his music heavily across multiple seasons, and the Season 7 finale track "Come Join the Murder", written by the show's creator Kurt Sutter and performed with The Forest Rangers, hit number 9 on Billboard's Hot Rock Chart. Beyond that, his music has turned up in Californication, Marvel's The Punisher, Longmire, This Is Us, and even the Marvel film Logan. His 2017 album Darkest Darks, Lightest Lights pushed further into electrified rock territory while keeping the folk and country threads alive.
