About

Also known as: Dresden Dolls

The Dresden Dolls describe their sound as "Brechtian punk cabaret", a term Amanda Palmer coined because she was terrified the press would slap a gothic label on them. The Boston duo, Palmer on piano and vocals and Brian Viglione on drums, built their reputation through theatrical live shows packed with stilt walkers, fire breathers, and living statues, turning every performance into something closer to a carnival than a gig. Their 2003 self titled debut, produced by Martin Bisi at a Brooklyn factory, landed two songs in the Triple J Hottest 100 and got them signed to Roadrunner Records. Their second studio album, Yes, Virginia..., came out in 2006, the same summer they played Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and Reading and Leeds. They also toured with Panic! at the Disco and opened Pinkpop's main stage in the Netherlands. Their music even made it into an original production at the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge. Palmer and Viglione took a hiatus in 2007, with Palmer stepping into solo work, but the Dolls left behind a catalog that pretty much defined the dark cabaret sound.
