Gramophone once called Alexandre Kantorow a "fire breathing virtuoso with a poetic charm" and Fanfare went further, dubbing him "Liszt reincarnated". The French pianist from Clermont Ferrand made history in 2019 when he won the first prize, gold medal, and Grand Prix at the 16th International Tchaikovsky Competition, becoming the first French winner in the event's history. He was the only finalist to play Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 2 in G major, a bold choice that clearly paid off. Kantorow has kept a remarkably steady course since then. Rather than chasing a major label deal, he stayed with BIS, the small Swedish label now part of Platoon. In 2023 he received the Gilmore Artist Award, a 300,000 dollar prize he didn't even know he was being considered for. His 2024 Brahms Schubert recording picked up Gramophone's Piano Award in 2025, and that same year he played Prokofiev and Liszt in concert. Perhaps his most memorable recent moment was performing Ravel's Jeux d'Eau at the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony in pouring rain, utterly unrattled.
