About
Julius Asal has a gift for making unlikely combinations feel inevitable. The German pianist built his reputation on pairing composers who have no obvious business sharing a programme, like Scriabin alongside Domenico Scarlatti, separated by two centuries, with his own improvisational transitions stitching the whole thing together. Improvisation is not just a party trick for Asal but a genuine part of how he thinks about music, something he has been doing since long before he ever had a formal lesson. Signed to Deutsche Grammophon in 2023, he released his label debut in 2024 to strong critical notice, and followed it in 2025 with Siena Tapes, a record that mixes Ravel with original Asal compositions and was recorded in a chapel on Rick Rubin's Tuscany estate. That same year he picked up the Terence Judd Hallé Award and became the first ever Academy of St Martin in the Fields BBC New Generation Associate. He has played Wigmore Hall, the Vienna Musikverein, and the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, and once stepped in last minute for Evgeny Kissin in Bologna.
