Arlo Parks won the Mercury Prize with her debut album Collapsed in Sunbeams, a record that somehow managed to feel both intimate and era defining at the same time. Released in January 2021, it peaked at number three on the UK Albums Chart and earned her the Breakthrough Artist Award at the Brit Awards that same year. The album title comes from Zadie Smith's novel On Beauty, which tells you something about the literary sensibility Parks brings to her songwriting. Her sound pulls from alternative pop, soul, bedroom pop and neo soul, built around her delicate vocal tone and a talent for lyrics that land with quiet precision. Her second album, My Soft Machine, arrived in May 2023, with its title drawn from dialogue in the 2019 film The Souvenir. It came with a run of singles including Weightless, Impurities, Blades, and Pegasus, the last of which features Phoebe Bridgers. Parks has also shared stages with Harry Styles, Billie Eilish and Clairo, and performed on the Park Stage at Glastonbury in 2022, where she joined Phoebe Bridgers to play Graceland Too.
