Avatar have been quietly building one of the more interesting careers in heavy metal since forming in Mölndal, Sweden in 2001. Over the course of ten studio albums, the Gothenburg act has carved out a sound that pulls from melodic death metal, groove metal, and theatrical avant garde elements, with vocalist Johannes Eckerström's distinctive clown face paint becoming as much a part of their identity as the music itself. They have toured alongside Avenged Sevenfold, Five Finger Death Punch, and In Flames, steadily expanding their foothold in the US rock scene. That foothold became impossible to ignore when their track "The Dirt I'm Buried In" hit number one on US rock radio in August 2023, reportedly taking longer to reach the top spot than any song in the previous twenty years. The music video for that track dropped in late 2022, and it sits alongside earlier fan favourites like "Black Waltz" and "Going Hunting" as evidence of a band that keeps finding new angles without losing the heaviness at its core.
