Bloc Party built their reputation on a sound that's hard to pin down neatly: indie rock with real rhythmic urgency, shades of post punk, electronica, and house all folded in. Their 2005 debut Silent Alarm is still the touchstone, certified platinum in the UK, voted NME Album of the Year, and described by Pitchfork as "rhythmically vital and melodically sharp." The band got their break when frontman Kele Okereke handed a demo to Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos and BBC Radio 1 DJ Steve Lamacq at a gig in 2003, and Lamacq called it genius on air the very next chance he got. Second album A Weekend in the City hit number two on the UK Albums Chart, and the band kept releasing records through hiatuses and lineup changes. Original members Gordon Moakes and Matt Tong have both since left, with Louise Bartle and Harry Deacon filling out the current lineup. Their sixth album Alpha Games arrived in 2022, followed by the EP The High Life in 2023. Over three million albums sold worldwide, and a seventh record is on the way.
