About
Interpol hit the ground running in early 2000s New York, cutting their teeth at Luna Lounge alongside the Strokes and the National before their 2002 debut Turn On the Bright Lights landed them at the top of Pitchfork's album of the year list. The Manhattan quartet built their sound around staccato bass lines, rhythmic interlocking guitars and a snare heavy mix that drew instant comparisons to Joy Division and Echo and the Bunnymen, though the band always resisted any single definitive tag. Antics followed in 2004, going Gold in both the UK and the US and delivering their first UK Top 40 hits with "Slow Hands", "Evil" and "C'mere". Since then they have kept a steady pace, releasing six more studio albums including El Pintor in 2014, Marauder in 2018 and The Other Side of Make Believe in 2022. They have no single primary songwriter, with every member feeding into the compositional process, which gives their catalogue a genuinely collective feel.
