Few British bands from the mid 2000s indie boom made as immediate an impact as Editors. Formed in Birmingham after the members met studying Music Technology at Staffordshire University, they went through a handful of names, including Pilot, The Pride and Snowfield, before landing on Editors when they signed to Kitchenware Records in 2004. Their debut album The Back Room arrived in 2005, with 'Munich' eventually becoming their first top 10 single and earning them a Mercury Prize nomination. The follow up An End Has a Start hit number one in the UK in 2007, brought a Brit Awards nomination for Best British Band, and produced 'Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors'. Over seven studio albums, the band have steadily shifted their sound, leaning further into electronics and darker textures with In This Light and on This Evening, which also topped the UK Albums Chart in 2009. The self produced In Dream followed in 2015, then Violence in 2018 and EBM in 2022, showing a band willing to keep pushing into synth heavy territory rather than settle into a comfortable groove.
