CMAT wrote her breakthrough track "I Wanna Be a Cowboy, Baby!" in 20 minutes, alone in a flat in Manchester, crying after a breakup. That about sums up her songwriting instinct: emotionally raw, often very funny, and somehow both at once. The Guardian put it well, calling her songs "mournful yet accessible, emotionally literate and cleverly crafted, but, crucially, with a huge sense of humour". Her debut album If My Wife New I'd Be Dead hit number one in Ireland and pulled a Metacritic score of 85, winning the Choice Music Prize for Irish Album of the Year in 2023. She followed it up with Crazymad, for Me, which also debuted at number one in Ireland and earned a nomination for Best Album at the Ivor Novello Awards. Her third album Euro Country arrived in 2025, with singles including "Take A Sexy Picture Of Me" getting the video treatment. She spans indie pop, country, folk pop and alternative rock without any of it feeling forced, and has built a devoted fanbase, particularly among Irish LGBTQ+ listeners.
