Devin Townsend is the kind of artist who makes other musicians feel slightly inadequate. The Canadian guitarist, vocalist, and producer from New Westminster has built a catalog spanning 30 albums across projects that range from the brutal extreme metal of Strapping Young Lad to ambient, new age, and progressive rock territories. His wall of sound production style, built on heavily multi tracked guitars and layered vocal harmonies, has drawn comparisons to Robert Fripp and Frank Zappa, which tells you something about the ambition involved. His career got its unusual start when Steve Vai handpicked him to front the 1993 album Sex and Religion, but Townsend quickly grew frustrated with being someone else's instrument. Strapping Young Lad, the Devin Townsend Band, and later the Devin Townsend Project all followed, each project with its own distinct personality. His vocal range is genuinely startling, moving from full on screaming to operatic singing, sometimes within the same track. The 2019 release Empath, a sprawling and ambitious solo record, shows he has no interest in playing it safe.
