About
Dry Cleaning built their reputation on something genuinely unusual: vocalist Florence Shaw barely sings at all. Instead she delivers deadpan spoken word over the band's tightly coiled post punk grooves, drawing comparisons to Wire, Magazine, and Joy Division, and descriptions like "Annette Peacock fronting the Fall or PiL or Siouxsie and the Banshees." Shaw's lyrics pull from found texts, personal diaries, adverts, and her own observations on London walks, giving the songs a surreal, literary quality that feels like nothing else around. The South London four piece released their debut album New Long Leg in April 2021, recorded at Rockfield Studios in Wales with producer John Parish. It debuted at number four on the UK Albums Chart and earned widespread critical acclaim. Their second album Stumpwork followed in October 2022, pushing into jangle pop and funk territory while Shaw improvised much of the lyrics on the spot in the studio. Stumpwork even picked up a Grammy for Best Recording Package. A third album, Secret Love, arrived in January 2026, with Shaw leaning into more sung melodies on the choruses.
