About
Duman, which translates simply as "Smoke", got their name from one of their own songs, "Hâlimiz Duman", which is a fittingly moody origin story for a band that blends grunge and modern rock with traditional Turkish folk textures. Founded in Istanbul in 1999, the group built its sound around frontman Kaan Tangöze and guitarist Batuhan Mutlugil, with bassist Ari Barokas rounding out the core lineup. Tangöze and Barokas had actually played together in a band called Mad Madame while living on the West Coast of the United States before returning to Turkey and starting fresh. Over the course of more than two decades they have put out a steady run of studio albums, from their 1999 debut Eski Köprünün Altında through to Darmaduman and beyond. Their most recent studio album, Kufi, arrived in 2024, showing the band is still very much at it. With a catalogue that mixes Anatolian rock sensibilities with alternative rock punch, Duman have carved out a genuinely distinctive corner of the Turkish rock scene.
