Three consecutive Grammy wins for Best Contemporary Blues Album is a rare feat, and Fantastic Negrito pulled it off with three straight albums: The Last Days of Oakland in 2016, Please Don't Be Dead in 2018, and Have You Lost Your Mind Yet? in 2020. The Oakland based singer songwriter, born Xavier Amin Dphrepaulezz, plays what he calls "black roots music for everyone," blending blues, R&B, and roots sounds into something that's hard to pigeonhole. He'd spent years away from music before relaunching under the Fantastic Negrito name in 2014, and winning NPR's Tiny Desk Contest in 2015 quickly put him back on the radar. Since then he's kept a steady pace, releasing White Jesus Black Problems in 2022, an acoustic reworking called Grandfather Courage in 2023, and most recently Son of a Broken Man in 2024, an album shaped by his relationship with his father.
