About
High on Fire came out of the ashes of Sleep, the legendary stoner doom trio that Matt Pike helped define in the early 1990s. When Sleep imploded after London Records sat on their sprawling one song record Jerusalem, Pike channelled his frustration into something faster and meaner, pulling in drummer Desmond Kensel and bassist George Rice for garage jams that quickly evolved into a proper band. High on Fire kept Pike's massive guitar tone but pushed the tempo into thrash territory, with Pike also stepping up to handle vocals. The band has put out a string of heavy albums, from The Art of Self Defense in 2000 through to Cometh the Storm in 2024, and their 2018 record Electric Messiah earned them a Grammy for Best Metal Performance, which is no small thing for a band this committed to staying underground.
