About
Loma grew out of a tour rather than a rehearsal room: when Emily Cross and Dan Duszynski's project Cross Record hit the road with Jonathan Meiburg's band Shearwater, the three clicked and decided to make something together. They recorded their 2018 Sub Pop debut at Duszynski's rammed earth home studio in Dripping Springs, Texas, weaving in field recordings from the surrounding wildlife and developing a trick they called a "sonic mask", pitching Cross's voice subtly down to give it an uncanny, signature quality. Their second album Don't Shy Away expanded into programmed electronics, horns and free jazz textures, and landed an unexpected fan in Brian Eno, who praised the track "Black Willow" on BBC Radio. That led to Eno collaborating on "Homing", one of the more quietly remarkable guest spots in recent indie rock. For their third record How Will I Live Without a Body?, released in 2024, the band recorded across an English stone house and a nearby chapel, and drew on AI text trained on Laurie Anderson's writing for the album's title and lyrical fragments.
