About

Also known as: Mothers Finest

Few bands have been as simultaneously loved by live audiences and ignored by radio programmers as Mother's Finest. The Atlanta funk rock group, built around the vocal partnership of Joyce "Baby Jean" Kennedy and Glenn "Doc" Murdock, carved out a reputation in the 1970s as what AllMusic called "the most dangerous opening act in rock," lighting up arenas for Aerosmith, AC/DC, the Who and Ted Nugent. Classic Rock magazine summed up their sound as Sly and The Family Stone meets Led Zeppelin, which gives you a pretty good idea of what they were working with. Their interracial lineup was genuinely unusual for the era, and the major labels never quite knew what to do with them, caught between separate departments for Black and white music. Still, their albums from 1976 to 1979 all went gold, and their 1981 record Iron Age is now recognized as an early blueprint for funk metal, a genre that later bands like Living Colour and Red Hot Chili Peppers would run with. Mother's Finest essentially built a lane that others got famous driving in.
