Few bands have ever moved as fast as Oasis did in the mid 1990s. Their 1994 debut Definitely Maybe shot straight to number one in the UK and became the fastest selling debut album in British history at the time. The follow up, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, went even further, spending ten weeks at the top of the charts and becoming the UK's best selling album of the entire decade. That record also put them in the middle of the so called Battle of Britpop, a chart rivalry with Blur that the British press turned into a national event. At their peak in 1996, they played two nights at Knebworth to 125,000 people each time, the largest outdoor concerts the UK had seen. The band split abruptly in 2009 after Noel walked out backstage in Paris, but both Gallagher brothers went on to solo careers before Oasis reformed in 2024. With over 100 million records sold worldwide, eight UK number one singles and eight UK number one albums, their place in rock history is pretty hard to argue with.
