About
Also known as: Richard Aschroft, Richard Paul Ashcroft
Richard Ashcroft built one of British rock's most celebrated catalogues as the sole songwriter and frontman of the Verve, the Wigan band whose 1997 album Urban Hymns became one of the UK's best selling records of all time. "Bitter Sweet Symphony" reached number 12 in the US and turned into a genuine cultural landmark, even if a long running royalties dispute with ABKCO Records meant Ashcroft didn't see a penny from it for over two decades, until the rights were returned to him in 2019. Noel Gallagher once called him a "genius", and Chris Martin publicly named him "the best singer in the world". After the Verve wound down, Ashcroft launched a solo run that has quietly racked up six UK top three albums, including Alone with Everybody, Keys to the World and These People. He has since added a seventh, Lovin' You, released in October 2025. The British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors has handed him an Ivor Novello Award twice over, and his fingerprints on Britpop and indie rock are hard to overstate.
