Rhiannon Giddens is one of those rare artists who can move between a Pulitzer Prize winning opera and an old time banjo tune without missing a beat. A founding member and lead singer of the Grammy winning Carolina Chocolate Drops, she helped bring the largely forgotten tradition of Black string bands back into the spotlight, playing fiddle and banjo alongside her vocal work. Her solo output spans five albums, from the celebrated covers collection Tomorrow Is My Turn to Freedom Highway, where she turned her pen toward slavery and the civil rights movement, to You're the One, her first record made up entirely of original material. She co wrote the opera Omar with composer Michael Abels, a work about the life of West African Muslim scholar Omar Ibn Said, who was enslaved and brought to America. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2023. Her collaborations are just as wide ranging: she recorded with Francesco Turrisi across two albums, contributed to T Bone Burnett's New Basement Tapes project alongside Elvis Costello and Marcus Mumford, and even wrote a song for the video game Red Dead Redemption 2.
