About
The xx built their reputation on a sound that feels almost uncomfortably intimate: soft echoed guitar, prominent bass, minimal electronic beats, and the interlocking vocals of Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim. The London trio rounded out by Jamie Smith (better known as Jamie xx) released their debut album xx in 2009, and it landed hard, winning the Mercury Prize in 2010 and turning up in everything from Olympic broadcasts to Rihanna samples. Their music has a rare quality of feeling both sparse and deeply felt at the same time. Their second album Coexist hit number one in the UK in 2012, and after a gap that included Jamie xx releasing his solo record In Colour, the band returned with I See You in 2017, which also topped the UK charts and reached number two on the Billboard 200. Each record has pushed their minimalist template a little further into dancefloor and electronic territory without losing the hushed, almost confessional atmosphere that made them stand out from the start.
