About
Phoenix have been quietly doing things their own way since forming in Versailles in 1995, and the lineup has never changed. Thomas Mars, Deck d'Arcy, Christian Mazzalai, and Laurent Brancowitz built a sound that sits somewhere between indie pop, new wave, and pop rock, and it paid off spectacularly with their fourth album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. The singles '1901' and 'Lisztomania' broke them wide open, and the album won the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. Their fifth album, Bankrupt!, had them headlining Coachella and Primavera Sound and landing at number 4 on the Billboard 200. The band kept pushing in different directions after that. Ti Amo leaned into Italo disco and celebrated what they called their European and Latin roots, while Alpha Zulu was recorded inside the Louvre Palace during the pandemic, shaped by the loss of their longtime producer and friend Philippe Zdar. More recently, Phoenix performed at the 2024 Summer Olympics closing ceremony at the Stade de France, playing alongside Ezra Koenig of Vampire Weekend and French electronic artist Kavinsky.
