Tori Amos built her reputation on piano driven confessionals that go places most pop artists wouldn't dare, touching on sexuality, feminism, religion, and politics with a directness that still feels striking decades on. Born Myra Ellen Amos, she was classically trained at the Peabody Institute before rock pulled her in another direction, and that tension between formal discipline and raw emotional territory defines her sound. After a stint fronting the short lived pop rock act Y Kant Tori Read in the late 1980s, she relaunched as a solo artist and never looked back. Her breakthrough solo work produced a string of memorable singles including Cornflake Girl, Silent All These Years, Crucify, and A Sorta Fairytale, each showing her knack for wrapping deeply personal content in melodic hooks that stick. She has earned nine Grammy nominations and won an Echo Klassik award for the classical crossover album Night of Hunters. VH1 placed her at number 71 on their 100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll list, and she has stayed a committed ambassador for RAINN, the organisation supporting survivors of sexual violence, since its founding in 1994.
