Adekunle Gold first turned heads with a highlife cover of One Direction's "Story of My Life", retitled "Sade", which blew up in 2014 and landed him a deal with YBNL Nation. His debut album Gold hit number 7 on the Billboard World Albums chart, a strong opening for an artist who had quietly been designing YBNL's logo and doing graphic work for labelmates like Olamide before anyone knew his name as a musician. He later formed his own band, The 79th Element, a nod to the atomic number of gold. His sound moves across afrobeats, highlife and afropop, and he has kept a steady pace across six studio albums. In 2023 he signed to Def Jam Recordings and released Tequila Ever After, his first under the label. That same year he dropped the video for "Ogaranya", and he has also collaborated with his wife, fellow Nigerian artist Simi. Off stage, he opened up about living with sickle cell disease, saying it directly inspired his song "5 Star", and he now advocates for awareness through his own foundation.
