About
Named after the hero of Michael Ende's fantasy novel The Neverending Story, Atreyu have been one of the defining metalcore acts to come out of Southern California. Formed in Yorba Linda in 1998, the band built their reputation on a signature tension between Brandon Saller's melodic singing and the aggressive screaming of former frontman Alex Varkatzas, a dynamic that drove albums like The Curse and A Death Grip on Yesterday. The Curse shifted 450,000 copies, and A Death Grip on Yesterday cracked the Billboard 200 top ten, helped along by a placement on the Madden NFL 07 soundtrack. Their fourth record, Lead Sails Paper Anchor, debuted at number 8 on the Billboard 200 and marked a clear shift in sound, drawing mixed but interested reactions. A cover of Faith No More's "Epic" appeared as a bonus track on the American edition. Since then they've kept releasing material, now with ten studio albums to their name, the most recent being The End Is Not the End. Saller eventually stepped out from behind the drum kit to become the band's sole lead vocalist, with Kyle Rosa taking over on drums.
